Treasurer

Cheryl Lane is the Onota Township Treasurer. You may contact her by calling the township office to leave a message (906-343-6535) or sending an email (onotatreasurer at tds.net). Aside from being on the township board as an elected official, the treasurer is also responsible for property tax billing, distributing township funds, working with the county treasurer, property tax information requests, and managing the township finances (in cooperation with the clerk).

Pre-payment of taxes: It is unlawful for the treasurer to accept any payment in advance for next year’s taxes. Michigan levies taxes only for the current year of collection. Treasurers are also restricted by bond to the active year of collection. Please do not send any tax payments in advance.

The township treasurer only handles taxes for the current tax year (April 1 to March 31). To pay delinquent taxes from previous years, contact the Alger County Treasurer.

How to pay

Taxes are collected twice per fiscal year. Tax bills are mailed in July and December. Checks should be made payable to Onota Township. If you would like a receipt, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your tax payment. If your mailing address has changed, it is important that you contact the treasurer or assessor to update it. Until the end of February, the present year taxes may be mailed to:

Summer

Mailed at the beginning of July. Due by mid-September – see your current tax statement for an exact date.

If your summer taxes are past due, contact the treasurer before sending payment! What you owe has changed, and the amount of interest charged varies. The tax bill increases by one percent (1%) for every month a tax bill is past due. Even if a payment is only a few days late, the law requires the addition of an interest charge. One percent (1%) monthly interest will accrue up until the last day in February of the following year. From this point on, the taxes are due to Alger County.

Winter

Mailed by mid-December. Due by the final day of February or March 1 (see your current tax statement for an exact date).

How do I pay my taxes after the final due date?

As of March, property taxes are due to Alger County. Each year, all past due taxes are turned over to Alger County. You must now pay the taxed amount -plus- delinquent interest and fees . To pay past due taxes, contact the Alger County Treasurer’s Office (ph: 906-387-4535 / email: pjohnson@algercounty.gov)

Personal Property Taxes

Personal property taxes (PPT) apply to all businesses within Michigan. However, any small businesses within the township are likely to be exempt from paying personal property taxes, and should contact the assessor for more information before filling out the PPT Exemption Form. PPT payments are always due to the Township Treasurer. These taxes (including all past years, if delinquent) may be sent to:
